This is a great example of how those who sincerely want to know God better and be closer to Him are often more vulnerable than those who don't believe. Countless sincere people of faith have been duped, and their lives made into a mess because they believed some religious leader who said he or she'd been appointed by God to be their spiritual authority, and promised them the closer walk with God they longed for if they'd blindly and unquestioningly believe everything the leader said and obeyed everything the leader instructed them to do.

I totally agree. I remember seeing stats on this, and a surprisingly large percentage of church-goers haven't read the Bible themselves. I find it absurd that ANYONE would let a priest or minister or reverend or whatever interpret the Bible for them INSTEAD of reading it themselves. Things get even worse in Muslim countries.

When I am interested in something, I look into it myself. If something were as important to me as faith is to religious people, then I would DEFINITELY study it myself.

Wasn't there a Monty Python skit about a bunch of illiterate peasants where the priest "reads" the Bible to them and commands them to hand over all of their possessions or something like that?

Anyone who lets a church figure get away with anything even remotely resembling this is just being naive.

That is absurd that a large percentage of church-goes has their Bibles collecting dust. Worse with the Muslims? Somehow I don't doubt it. Seems to me that Muslims in other countries are influenced more by firey rhetoric from their religious leaders and their yellow journalism than people from the more critical western lands.

Proverbs 3:5-6
5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart
and lean not on your own understanding;

6 in all your ways acknowledge him,
and he will make your paths straight.

Proverbs 14:12
There is a way that seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death.

Matthew 7:24-27
24"Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. 26But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. 27The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash."

2 Corinthians 10:5
5We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.

2 Peter 1:20-21
20Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet's own interpretation. 21For prophecy never had its origin in the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.

James 1:22-25
22Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. 23Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror 24and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. 25But the man who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it—he will be blessed in what he does.

Keep studying. Peace and God bless.
