Yeah, the government here has been bending over backwards to downplay the fact that these guys were all radical Islamists. I keep hearing the media talk about how they "come from totally diverse backgrounds", as if there's no connection between them, when EVERYONE knows exactly what the connection between them is: they're all crazy hard-core violent fundamentalist Muslims.

They're downplaying the whole Muslim aspect of it because they don't want yahoos burning mosques, but I think that this is not the way to do it. They should be emphasizing that they are extreme Muslims, but that they have NOTHING to do with the normal Muslims in our society. At the same time, the normal Muslims should be going out of their way to distance themselves from the crazy guys, something which they unfortunately don't seem to be doing...

I, for one, would like to hear a more vocal and forceful condemnation of terrorism from Muslims around the world! Their silence on this, and other terrorist acts, is speaking volumes of the futility of the religion. When people are killing other people in the name of God… and if your religion supposedly ‘clearly’ condemns this random acts of murder… where is the outrage… the condemnation… the people standing up and pointing out IN THE KORAN where this is condemned.

I wonder if these were Christians what the response would be? It is not hard to imagine the unifying outcry from Christendom… WORLDWIDE… against acts like this.

I pretty much agree with what Trinity has written here. It would be VERY nice to see A HUGE NUMBER of Muslims stand up and condemn violence BY MUSLIMS. If you recall, there were HUGE protests by MILLIONS of Westerners in MANY Western cities over the Iraq war. There are a BILLION Muslims on the planet. How come we haven't seen any anti-Osama or anti-Wahabi rallies? Clearly Muslims do not condemn violence nearly as much as Westerners do, or else there WOULD be such rallies.

One tiny blip of hope came from the Muslim in Toronto who acted as a mole for the RCMP. He infiltrated the wannabe-terrorist group and helped to take them down. He is quite a devout guy, but he 'gets it'. He understands that extreme Islam is very bad for people like him, because Westerners will inevitably paint all Muslims with the same brush, especially in light of the fact that Muslims don't seem to be condemning the violent acts of their fellow Muslims in any serious way.

Trinity1, I think we've all been told many things about Islam from leaders in politics to leaders in journalism. Yet I think it is clearly apparent to the average Joe that Islam is a religion of so many contradictions that its members can swing in any direction and apparently have either Koranic or some Mullah's blessing on anything they do in the name of Allah the Merciful and his servant Mohammed, Allah bless him -- (pun intended - see the psychotic contradiction at work?); including violence, suicide bombing, you name it, etc.

I think the less a Muslim follows the Koran, especially as interpreted by radial Muslims, the more reasonable and socially acceptable to the rest of human society they become.

To an extent... maybe. There is, in my judgment, some veracity to their faith. After all, it does have over a billion adherents... some more misguided than others... but a billion none-the-less.

The problem is that there is no popular condemnation of these acts. When you engage those who disagree with you with violence and/or threats of violence (fatwas) healthy debate is destroyed and tyranny is the result.

The same argument could be made of the medieval church. Absolute power corrupts absolutely. It is a shame the Islam can not learn from history...

Just briefly, in some ways Islam is at the point in it's history that the Christian Church was in the 1200-1400s. The Reformation in Europe began with questioning the church, but then grew into political, social, and scientific skepticism that advanced our culture.

Islam (and it's leaders) aren't at that point yet and mercilessly squish any challenge to the "faith". Christianity has a similar history and maybe Islam will go thru an enlightment. Problem is, the Western world experienced this when Boiling oil was the worst WMD you could produce "in defense of the faith"Sad

What? A Muslim criticising a Muslim for anything done in the name of Allah the Merciful? Any Muslim that does that will get a fatwa exploding his butt faster than you can shout "RUN FOR COVER!".

You got a point. Except that the medieval church the power was consolidated in one man or a small circle in a central location. Islam has no central authority and no central authority figure on Earth. So with Mullahs vying for power they are as much fighting with each other as they are with everyone else. There is no one in charge of Islam that anyone can talk to and possibly reason with.

In the end either the last Mullah standing, or a core group of them led by one, is the one that wins. Then we are left wondering what is it going to take to apease him as he goes about being the absolute fascist of a militant and insane reich the world hasn't seen, feared, and put-an-end-to-it-before-it-became-too-late since the conclusion of World War II.

And no, Islam won't be learning from history - very unfortunately.

I'm concerned that we may be living in a part of history still in its infancy: What could develop into World War III. If so, you can bet all your gas credit cards that this very well funded and psychotic Mullah will be using nuclear weapons.

We live in interesting times.

Perhaps it is a reason why the USA and UK are trying to keep the worst kinds of WMDs out of their reach if and when it reaches that boiling point. Funny that no other nations seems to see this coming as a possibility nor have a concern.

Ryck, how can you say something this absurd? You think that the vast majority of Muslims are "psychotic"?!? Where on Earth do you get these ideas? How can you POSSIBLY justify this point of view?

Three words: World Trade Center.

I used to work there. I lost friends and acquaintances there. I lost a lot of good memories there. Thousands of people lost their lives there. For what? So some suicidal idiots at the command of some psychotic who is obviously smarter than they are, albeit just as evil, can hurt and kill innocent men, women, and children via a plan of treachery and deceit so they can spend the rest of their afterlife in heavenly bliss with 72 virgins all to the glory of Allah the Merciful!

Makes me want to puke!

Perhaps you're right. Please excuse me. My feelings are still quite raw.
