Vatican affirms ban on gay priests
Document says men with ‘transitory’ gay tendencies can still be ordained

Updated: 5:20 a.m. ET Nov. 29, 2005
VATICAN CITY - The Vatican on Tuesday published its long-awaited document on gays in the priesthood, saying that men with “deep-seated” gay tendencies shouldn’t be ordained but that those with “transitory” tendencies could be if they had overcome them for three years.

The official release of the “Instruction” from the Congregation for Catholic Education came a week after an Italian Catholic news agency posted a leaked copy on its Web site. As a result, the document’s contents were already known.

Reaction has been mixed, with conservatives saying it may help reverse the “gay culture” that has grown in many U.S. seminaries. Liberal critics have complained that the restrictions will create morale problems among existing priests and lead to an even greater priest shortage in the United States.

Will this help bring us together?
You know, the more people push, the more people push back.
Is there an answer to this? Is there a better way?
This looks like it's going to cause more of a division than help .

I do not want to hurt any Catholics by saying this. The Catholic church has changed. It no longer protects the people the people protect the church. It no longer minsters to the lost it takes care of itself.

Revelation 18:
1 After this I saw another angel coming down from heaven. He had great authority, and the earth was illuminated by his splendor. 2 With a mighty voice he shouted:
"Fallen! Fallen is Babylon the Great!
She has become a home for demons
and a haunt for every evil spirit,
a haunt for every unclean and detestable bird.
3 For all the nations have drunk
the maddening wine of her adulteries.
The kings of the earth committed adultery with her,
and the merchants of the earth grew rich from her excessive luxuries."

4 Then I heard another voice from heaven say:
"Come out of her, my people,
so that you will not share in her sins,
so that you will not receive any of her plagues;
5 for her sins are piled up to heaven,
and God has remembered her crimes.
6 Give back to her as she has given;
pay her back double for what she has done.
Mix her a double portion from her own cup.
7 Give her as much torture and grief
as the glory and luxury she gave herself.
In her heart she boasts,
'I sit as queen; I am not a widow,
and I will never mourn.'
8 Therefore in one day her plagues will overtake her:
death, mourning and famine.
She will be consumed by fire,
for mighty is the Lord God who judges her.

I'm not saying that this is where the Catholic Church is but look for the works of the Holy Spirit in every direction that you look to find guidance. Do you recognize the Holy Spirit in the works of the place you are searching? If you do not then you should not continue to look there for guidance.

I understand your sentiments. On another board I ran afoul of some of what I call "Uber-Catholics": They long for the days when all Christians save the Coptics and gnostic heretics and the like were under the RCC's authority and desperately want such days to return. They are pretty awful about that, kind of like Calvinists. They seem to mean well once you get to know them, but...

The RCC leadership is indeed quite self-serving and this is evident in their response to child sexual abuse scandals and the church's response to LGBT Catholics. It is all very unfortunate. It's good, though, that the RCC has a longstanding history and can respond to crises and turn on a dime. Unlike Protestant fundamentalists who claim the Bible as their authority in the particular way they interprest it, RCC loyalists place their trust in the RCC hierarchy. They admit they are just men in authority (something Protestant fundamentalists deny) and can turn on a dime when they want to.

The RCC doesn't want to admit it but their hold on people is waning. In places like Nigeria and the Phillipines they are appearing as the voice of the oppressed, but, in places like Argentina, Quebec, and Spain, they are increasingly seen as the oppressor just like in Northern and Western Europe and the rest of North America.
